The city lies not far from where of the river Krka flows into the Adriatic in a naturally protected harbor, passing through a 2.5 km long natural channel-like opening. For the first time Šibenik was mentioned at Christmas 1066 as a fortress and settlement in the gift deed of theCroatian King Petar Kresimir IV. The most important monument of
Šibenik is the Dome of St. Jacob, whose roof consists of a barrel vault of cantilevered stone slabs. The cathedral belongs to UNESCO world cultural heritage.
