The name refers to a Croatian and Italian Noble Family, also known as Frankapan or Frangipan, in Italian as Frangipanior in Hungarian as Frangepán. The belongings and private estates of this aristocratic family were threatened from botheast and south, Ottomans and Venetians.
NOVI VINODOLSKI
The oldest written documents in this area certify the importance of Novi Vinodolski as the political and cultural centrum of the Frankopan principality, a territory exposed to many rigors, Turkish invasions or havoc caused by the Venetian galleys. It is easy to assume that the history of this city and region was written in dire straits. It is notsurprising that the representatives of Vinodol – Grobnik, Trsat, Bakar, Hreljin, Drivenik, Grižane and Bribir all met in Novi Grad (the New City), how Novi Vinodolski was once called, to compose and sign the Law Codex of Vinodol on the 6th of January 1288. This was the first juristic codex of the southern Slavs, written in Croatian Glagolitic script.
KRALJEVICA
The city was mentioned in 1525 as the harbor of the Frankopan city Hreljin. A feudal castle (the Old Town) of the Noble Family Zrinski was built here at the start of the 17thcentury. The castle is located in the city center, ruled by the Zrinski Family.
In 1650 the Frankopans built the castle ‘The New Town’, being called the ‘Frankopan City’ by the locals today.
In 1671 the alleged conspiracy of the Zrinski and Frankopan family against the House of Hapsburg was plotted. The conspiracy failed, and as a result all of the estates andwealth of the Frankopans and Zrinski were plundered andconfiscated, including the two castles in Kraljevica. The old castle was transformed by the Austrian Army into a military property, the new becoming a military infirmary. The infirmary later became a civil hospital, and was functional up to 1990.
Karl the IV decided in 1729 that a shipyard needs to be built to compete with Venice, and it was the 1st ever built on the Croatian coast.
At the end of the 17th century the first shipyard was built, and many of them still serve as a workplace for people. In the 18th Century the ‘royal harbor’ was built. This industry remains important to this very day.
Around the year 1900 Kraljevica became a sea resort. Old mansions from that time can still be found today.
