Island of Korčula

In the town of Korčula is the alleged birthplace of Marco Polo, which can be visited. Since the 15th century the Moreška sword dance isdocumented in Korcula.

This tradition originated in Spain and was widely spread in the Mediterranean. The Moreška sword dance symbolizes a battle that is fought by the armies of a Christian and a Moorish king over a woman. The fight is accompanied by marching music. The Moreška is traditionally performed on 29 July, the day of the martyr Theodore.
